Sense and Sensibility

Kate Hamill’s innovative adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility uses a group of Gossips as a Greek chorus, commenting on the action and judging the central characters. In directing this show for Summer Circle, I thought it would be fun to incorporate a beach party aesthetic. Sensible Elinor and her sensitive sister Marianne could fit right into a sitcom like Gidget. Jane Austen mastered the tropes of romantic comedy long before beach movies came along, but this story of young people falling in love despite significant social constraints remains both classic and contemporary.
